Sam Schmidt to Release Inspiring Autobiography 'No Finish Line'
Twenty-six years after a racing accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, former INDYCAR driver and team owner Sam Schmidt will release his memoir, "No Finish Line: A Racer's Journey of Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose," on May 5.
Written with 13-time New York Times best-selling author Don Yeager, "No Finish Line" shares the unforgettable story of Schmidt's early days as a young driver and entrepreneur, the 200-mph crash that rendered him a quadriplegic and the incredible life he's built since that life-altering day.
A former control freak, he has learned to delegate. A once-singularly-minded, self-described egocentric racer, he now lives to help others. The son of a driver who was also paralyzed from the sport, Schmidt has lived an astonishing, driven life.
"I wrote 'No Finish Line' to help others find inspiration to build a life beyond their wildest dreams," said Schmidt. "Whether someone is facing a life-changing injury or an overwhelming obstacle, I hope my story shows what's possible."
Almost immediately after his accident, Schmidt started a foundation, which has raised millions of dollars for spinal cord injury treatment and rehabilitation. He also built successful Indy Lights and IndyCar teams. Thanks to cutting-edge technology, he defied expectations by driving again, controlling a car with only the movement of his head. He later spoke at his alma mater, Pepperdine University, delivering the commencement speech for his son's graduating class and receiving an honorary doctorate on the same day. And, maybe his proudest moment yet, he stood to dance with his daughter at her wedding.
The book also details some of Schmidt's extraordinary adventures, including tandem skydiving with duct tape holding his arms and legs together and becoming the first person in the United States to receive a restricted driver's license for a semi-autonomous vehicle.
"After a life-changing spinal cord injury, Sam faced an uphill battle. 'Will I ever be me again?' 'What do I do with the rest of my life?' 'Will I walk my daughter down the aisle at her wedding?'" said racing legend Mario Andretti. "This book is a must-read for everyone--a memoir of racing success, adversity, a fighting spirit and optimism."
Published by Diversion Books, "No Finish Line" goes on sale May 5 and is available now for pre-sale through major online retailers. In addition to hard copies, an audio version is also available, narrated by Schmidt's son, Spencer. All author proceeds will benefit DRIVEN to support spinal cord injury research, advocacy, and rehabilitation.
